The Philippine Women’s National Football team set their next step to compete against powerful squads worldwide in the scene following their historic win, bringing the first ever ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s crown to the Philippines against Thailand last July 17, 2022.
During the group stage of the AFF, the Philippines resulted in four wins and one defeat, among the six participating teams in Group A, with 7-0 as their best score versus Singapore.
Moreover, Filipinas continued to dominate other teams in the series. Despite losing against Thailand in the group stage, a qualifying team in the last AFF 2019 finals, the team took it as an opportunity to bounce back in the tournament and found a formula to break down Thailand’s defense in the finals.
The team attacked and scored two goals in the first half. While on the 88-minute mark in the second half, Sarina Bolden unleashed a sublime finish to have a 3-0 run.
The tournament resulted in Thailand taking second place and Myanmar in third place.
The said event has eleven women’s football teams divided into two distinctions. Group A comprises Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia; Group B has the defending champion Vietnam, along with Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Cambodia, and Laos.
According to Mariano Araneta Jr., president of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), activities are commencing to maintain the success of Filipinas.
As of date, PFF intends to organize a four-nation tournament in the Philippines in preparation for the upcoming world stage tournament — the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.
